GENERAL INFORMATION
There is no specific date for the founding of Ashkelon. It’s origins date back approximately 5000 years and it is considered to be one of the world’s most ancient cities, a cradle of human culture. Thanks to its special strategic position, the city fulfilled a vital role in the ancient history of the East.
Ashkelon has one of the world’s most beautiful coastlines, with white sandy beaches and spectacular Mediterranean views. Like so many other places in Israel, Ashkelon is built upon the ruins of past civilzations. The city also plays a role in biblical history as the place where Delilah cut Samson’s hair to sap his strength.
BEACHES
The 10 kilometres long Ashkelon beach attracts both local and foreign beach goers. Ashkelon is proclaimed a national tourism site, and is rapidly developing this sphere.
SPORTS ACTIVITIES AND ENTERTAINMENT
Five hotels and resort centres are already operating in the city.
Tourists have at their disposal restaurants and pubs, sports facilities, hated swimming pools, the “ Ashkeluna “ water amusement park, two country clubs, an amphitheatre, a tennis club, museums, cinemas, bowling alleys fishing spots and bathing beaches.
The Ashkelon Marina area has a 600 vessel docking capacity making it one of the largest marinas in Israel. Planned for the area behind the marina is a tourist complex of hotels, vacation units, shopping, entertainment centres, and other tourist services.
Ashkelon’s tennis club is famous world over for its number of available courts and the scenic beauty of its environment.
SIGHTSEEING
The Ashkelon Khan and Museum is an ancient Arab hotel, which is now the home of Ashkelon’s history museum. A replica of Ashkelon ‘s famous Canaanite silver calf is on display. The Khan’s municipal art gallery includes displays by local artists, including new immigrants. Also located in the Khan are a café and a fish restaurant. Entertainment shows, concerts and dancing are held there as well.
The National park is the site in Ashkelon of the ancient cities. It is located on the southern coast of modern Ashkelon. From the entrance, the road passes through the 12th century Crusader city walls and the Canaanite earth ramparts. One of the most intriguing sections of the park is the sculpture garden, in which many Roman statues stand. There are also several ruins of Byzantine and Crusader churches nestled within the park.
