GENERAL INFORMATION
One of the first Jewish settlements in the country, Zichron Yaakov was established by Baron Edmond de Rothschild and named in honour of his father Yaakov (James). It is the home of “Carmel “ and other wineries, where the grapes that grow in the vicinity produce the wine sold throughout the country and the world. Its altitude, proximity to the coast and natural beauty has made it a popular vacation area.
The population of Zichron Yaakov is a combination of veteran settlers and new immigrants. There is a sizeable religious community with a wide range of educational institutions, which attracts English-speaking students from all over the world.
It is located on the magnificent and breathtaking southern slope of Carmel Mountains, overlooking open scenery of the Mediterranean coast, the Maagan Michael pools, and agricultural fields. It has an excellent climate: in the summer it’s warm and sunny with a cool breeze due to its height and open passage from the sea. The winter is cool and rainy.
It seems as if time stands still when it comes to Zichron Yaakov, a harmonious atmosphere of coffee shops, famous wineries, artists, restored house architecture in a brick paved old city, along with a large variety of shops, restaurants, banks, pharmacies, good medical services, and large supermarkets.
Zichron Yaacov maintains its historical background and atmosphere with the stress the community puts on restoration of old 19th century agricultural estates.
